In recent years, the musical and historical connections among Yiddish, Greek and Turkish repertoires stemming from the Ottoman period have opened a truly fascinating window onto the trans-cultural nature of Yiddish music. Led by a team of musicians who are equally masters of their tradition and creative innovators, this workshop will include sessions on repertoire, instrumental technique, performance style, theory and history, as well as traditional and contemporary approaches. We will work both by ear and with written transcriptions, in plenary sessions, break-out rooms and small ensembles. It is suitable for both intermediate and advanced instrumentalists.

In order to feel comfortable in this workshop and to benefit the most from it, we strongly recommend that you:
i) have at least an intermediate technical level on your instrument,
ii) have at least a few years’ experience playing Yiddish, Greek or Turkish music, OR
iii) are an advanced classical, jazz, or other kind of musician and you can learn and play by ear as well as from written music.

Please note: due to popular demand, we are offering this workshop in two successive sessions this year. The topics and approaches will be the same in both sessions, with differences due to different teaching styles and personalities. Please feel free to register for the session that best fits your schedule. It is possible to register for both workshops. >> Session II
