Intermediate/Advanced Song Workshop
for singers, accompanists and bands
July 18 - 25, 2023
10 a.m. – 1 p.m. & 3 – 6 p.m.

with Sveta KundishDilek Türkan, Tayfun Guttstadt, Vassilis Ketentzoglou, Alan Bern and Eftychia Mitritsa

In 2023 we will continue to explore the striking connections among certain repertoires of Yiddish, Greek and Turkish Song. This workshop will be led by three world-class singers who have mastered their respective traditions and gone further to create their own, new individual styles. They will be joined by three equally accomplished and innovative instrumental accompanists. In the spirit of shared artistic research we will work on both unaccompanied and accompanied songs in each language, discuss their similarities and differences, go deeply into traditional vocal and instrumental accompaniment styles, learn about the history, theory and cultural context of the songs, and explore how to make them our own in small ensembles.

In order to feel comfortable in this workshop and to benefit the most from it, we strongly recommend that you:

i) be a confident and experienced singer or accompanist of Yiddish, Greek or Turkish vocal music, OR
ii) have a strong vocal or instrumental ability in a different tradition (e.g. classical, jazz, Irish, Fado, etc.) as well as the ability to learn music by ear.

An important word of advice! If you are more interested in an immersion in Yiddish vocal or instrumental music, rather than the cross-cultural approach of this workshop, please consider taking Introduction to Yiddish Song and/or Introduction to Klezmer Music. These workshops are aimed at intermediate-to-advanced singers and instrumentalists looking either for an intensive introduction to Yiddish music, or for a way to fill in the gaps in their existing knowledge.
We also highly recommend the workshop “A Speed Date with Judaism: 3000 Years in 3 Days" to everyone who would like to learn more about the Jewish thought and rituals that provide the cultural context and deeper meanings of Yiddish music.

Workshop fee: 530 € Standard / 355 € Reduced / 740 € Sponsor / 180 € under 18
